Metrolink Train Crash

The Chatsworth Metrolink train crash claimed the lives of 25 and left 135 injured. The cause of the fatal accident, which occurred Sept. 12, 2008, is still under investigation.

According to reports issued by the National Transportation Safety Board, the accident was caused because the Los Angeles Metrolink commuter train’s engineer failed to stop at a red light signal and crashed into an oncoming Union Pacific freight train.

The impact of the collision derailed both trains, trapping some 200 passengers beneath the mangled metal for nearly a day. Rescue workers worked tirelessly in an effort to free the injured passengers and recover the bodies of those who were killed in the accident.

The engineer, who died at the scene of the accident, is suspected to have been text messaging at the time of the accident. Federal officials have reported that they are in the process of reviewing the engineer’s cell phone records to see if he was, in fact, texting when the accident occurred.
